George Sceviour
was born in Exploits Harbour in 1836 died Mar.07,1911 and buried in the
C of E Cemetery at Exploits. He was 23 years old when
his father George died (1789-1859). He worked with his father from about
the age of 12, and learned how to build skiffs and schooners and how to
sail to the Labrador.
He married "Sarah Ann Winsor"
in 1865. She came to Exploits Harbour from Aquaforte, Ferryland in
1863, They had seven sons and one daughter in family, The first
two sons died in infancy, The eldest four sons of the five remaining
sail with their father to Labrador until about 1900 when the four of the
brothers built their own schooner in Brown's Arm, NF. They sail her
to Labrador from Exploits for about ten years, the schooner was called
the "Carrie S.". The youngest son was sent to school in St. John's,
the daughter left Exploits and went to live in the Chicago area of the
US. The family was members of the Church of England.
"Skipper Garge" first became a master of a vessel
at the age of 20 and continued to sail every season to Labrador until age
70. Although the schooners of the day had no reverse motors, he never
lost a vessel.
During the winter months he would organize camp
sites in the wooded and sheltered coves of the bay, cut and saw timber
and planking, and build schooner hulls, Small cabins would be built for
the workmen, and sometimes their familys, as well as sheds for tools, supplies,
the hulls were then taken to Exploits and finish and ready for the Labrador
coast in June.
